EXCLUSIVE: Gibson Doesn't Want to Be 'That Kind of Monster'
In an exclusive interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, Mel Gibson talks about his recent D.U.I. arrest and anti-Semitic remarks.

He adds that he plans to continue making movies and working to heal himself and those he offended.
"All you can do is take another step, keep breathing," he says, according to a partial transcript of the interview released by ABC.
Clean shaven and casually dressed in jeans and a blue checkered shirt, Gibson tells Sawyer he began drinking two months before sheriff's deputies arrested him in Malibu on July 28.

"Years go by, you're fine," he says. "And then all of a sudden in a heartbeat, in an instant, on an impulse, somebody shoves a glass of Mescal in front of your nose and says, `It's from Oaxaca.' And it's burning its way through your esophagus and you go, `Oh man, what did I do that for? I can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.'"

The interview with Sawyer is the first time Gibson has spoken to the media since sparking a scandal by unleashing what he later called "vitriolic and harmful words" during his arrest. Gibson told the arresting officer: "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asked him, "Are you a Jew?"

"The last thing I want to be is that kind of monster," he tells Sawyer in the interview.
The 50-year-old actor-director says he knows there are some in Hollywood who will refuse to work with him because of those statements.
I feel sad because they've obviously been hurt and frightened and offended enough to feel that they have to do that," he says. "Um, and it's their choice. There's nothing I can do about that."
Gibson pleaded no contest to charges of drunken driving on Aug. 17 under a deal in which he will serve three years' probation, pay a fine and attend alcohol rehabilitation classes. He also volunteered to make a public-service announcement about the hazards of drinking and driving.

Pitt will narrate "Design: e2," a series about environmentally friendly architecture, which is slated to air in June on PBS, a spokeswoman from kontentreal productions said Tuesday.

"His involvement will allow us to educate more viewers than we had ever hoped about the importance of green building," executive producer Karena Albers said in a statement.

The six-part series will focus on worldwide efforts to build environmentally friendly structures through sustainable architecture and design.

Pitt was last seen on film in "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" with girlfriend Angelina Jolie. The two are expecting their first child later this year.

Nicole Kidman will star in and produce an untitled spy thriller described as a female version of "The Bourne Identity."
Screenwriter Simon Kinberg's project, whose plot details are being kept under wraps, was pre-emptively picked up by Regency Enterprises and 20th Century Fox, the firms behind Kinberg's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."
Kidman originally was attached to co-star in that film alongside Brad Pitt. She dropped out because of scheduling conflicts, paving the way for Angelina Jolie to join the cast and ignite a well publicized romance.
Kidman, last in theaters with "Bewitched," recently wrapped "The Visiting," a horror-thriller also starring Daniel Craig, the new James Bond. Kinberg, one of the town's most in-demand writers, wrote Fox's upcoming "X-Men: The Last Stand."

After an impromptu arm-wrestling match with Semel, Cruise happily repeated, albeit in jest, his "Oprah" chair-hopping episode to trumpet his joy about his fiancee and their soon-to-arrive offspring. Then he brought the very pregnant Holmes onto the stage, where he beamed and patted her round belly.

And, yes, he then sealed the interlude with a kiss.

Five years after the dot-com bubble burst, job growth has returned to Silicon Valley. But it's a different kind of growth than in past recoveries, favoring higher-skilled workers.
Netflix Inc.'s hiring shifts are typical. During the tech boom, the online movie-rental service created 100 customer-service jobs near its Los Gatos, Calif., headquarters in the heart of Silicon Valley. After the tech bust in 2000, Netflix eliminated half of those positions. But the total headcount at Netflix's Silicon Valley offices has grown 20%, to nearly 200 staffers in the last few years.

That's because Netflix, while shedding some lower-end jobs, has aggressively created new, higher-level jobs. It's adding jobs in departments such as Web engineering and product development: That groups' hiring of engineers jumped 20% to more than 50 people in 2005 alone. "Our new engineers have an average of seven to 15 years experience," says Patty McCord, Netflix's chief talent officer. "Five years ago, we hired people with three to five years of experience."

Past tech recoveries tended to bring new lower-skilled jobs as well as high-skill jobs. This time, tech firms -- from big companies like Hewlett-Packard Co. to mid- and small-size firms such as Netflix, Adobe Systems Inc., and SanDisk Corp. -- have moved lower-skill jobs out of the Silicon Valley area to cheaper locations, or outsourced them to foreign countries. The new jobs they are creating locally often require specialized skills in engineering and design. Young companies like Google Inc. are simply starting out hiring at the high end, further shifting the overall balance.

Paramount Pictures has hired Universal Pictures chairwoman Stacey Snider to head its recently acquired DreamWorks division, Paramount said Sunday.
The 44-year-old Snider, whose hire had been long-rumored, will share the title of chairman and CEO with David Geffen, one of DreamWorks' founders.
She worked for Universal for nine years, the past six as chairwoman, and oversaw the production of such films as "The Mummy" and "A Beautiful Mind"

At DreamWorks, Snider will run a far smaller operation than at Universal. She is expected to guide the production of four to six films a year along with Geffen and Steven Spielberg. She will answer directly to Paramount chairman Brad Grey.
In December, The Hollywood Reporter named Snider the third most powerful woman in Hollywood on its "Power 100" list of the top women in entertainment.
Universal has not yet named a replacement for Snider.
Paramount bought DreamWorks the company founded in 1994 by Spielberg, Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg on Dec. 11 in a deal worth $1.6 billion in cash and debt.
Paramount is a unit of media company Viacom Inc.

The Oscar-winning Boston buddies will reunite onscreen in an untitled drama inspired by two real-life attorneys, who fight a 15-year battle to free an innocent man on death row, Daily Variety reports. Save a couple of cameos in Kevin Smith's Dogma and Jersey Girls, the twosome hasn't headlined a movie together since 1997's Good Will Hunting, for which they shared the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Affleck will play Michael Banks and Damon, J. Gordon Cooney, two lawyers at a Philadelphia firm who work pro bono on the appeal of John Thompson, who claims he was wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to death. The attorneys manages to win nine stays of execution over the next decade and a half and eventually overturn the conviction and have Thompson cleared of all charges.
The film, which will be distributed by Disney's Touchstone Pictures division, is being produced by Affleck and Damon's Live Planet shingle. Chris Murphey has been tapped to write the script. As part of the movie deal, the companies acquired the life-story rights to the attorneys and Thompson for an unspecified sum.

Live Planet is the multimedia outfit that hatched Damon and Affleck's now-scotched reality series Project Greenlight. It's also developing for Miramax Gone Baby Gone, the story of two Beantown private detectives investigating a girl's kidnapping. The film is based on a novel by Dennis Lehane and is expected to mark Affleck's feature directing debut.
With news of their legal drama circulating, Damon and Affleck can finally put aside the rumors spread by OK! magazine that the actors were ready to take over the roles immortalized by Paul Newman and Robert Redford in 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
"There's no truth, never was," Affleck's rep, Ken Sunshine, tells E! Online. "Never any thought about Butch Cassidy, never any meetings about it. It's just not true."

A veteran Academy Award nominee and a 14-year-old unknown will join the cast of J.K. Rowling's epic Harry Potter series as filming begins next week on the latest movie, producers said.
Millions of fans across the world are eagerly awaiting the adaptation of Rowling's fifth book "Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix" which sees the return of young actor Daniel Radcliffe in the title role.
Filming will begin Monday in Hertfordshire, a county in southern England. The movie is not slated for release until next year.
The plot centers on the arrival of Dolores Umbridge, an unpopular new professor at wizard academy Hogwarts. She will be played by actress Imelda Staunton, nominated for a 2005 Oscar for her performance in the bleak period drama "Vera Drake."
Potter also wrestles with his attraction to new character Luna Lovegood, a role taken by 14-year-old newcomer Evanna Lynch.
Lynch beat out 15,000 young rivals in an open casting for the part in Britan.
The last film in the series, an adaptation of the fourth book, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," was directed by Mike Newell and grossed over $285 million at the box office. "The Order of the Phoenix" will be helmed by British director David Yates, who last year made the HBO movie "The Girl in the Cafe."

It was a recent hit in office cubicles around the world: a 3?-minute Internet video of two art students from China lip-synching a Backstreet Boys song. Now, some TV companies are hoping that the grainy clips zapped around the Internet can be something more: a cheap source of content, preapproved by a Web audience of millions.
Two channels have recently created 21st-century equivalents of "America's Funniest Home Videos." The new shows, on cable channels VH1 and Bravo, compile so-called "viral" videos that circulate on the Web. At a time when networks are moving to make TV shows more available on the Internet (this week, episodes of two CBS sitcoms went up on Yahoo), it's an illustration of the reverse phenomenon of the Web's inroads into TV.

On Jan. 13, VH1 will begin airing a new series, "Web Junk 20," showcasing clips compiled by iFilm, an online clearinghouse for amateur videos and movie trailers. MTV Networks, which owns VH1, acquired iFilm in the fall. The weekly countdown show on VH1 will blend some of the site's hits with commentary by comedian Patrice O'Neal. And Bravo has just ordered a six-episode run of "Outrageous and Contagious: Viral Videos," after showing it as a special last month.

VH1 hopes that its TV show will in turn send viewers to its online channel, VSpot, for on-demand viewing. "If ['Web Junk 20'] does average on air but drives a million streams on VSpot, that's still a win for us," says Brian Graden, president of entertainment for MTV Networks Music Group.
Examples of such crossover are increasing. Recently, a video clip that aired on "Saturday Night Live" of two "SNL" cast members rapping about their plans to see "The Chronicles of Narnia" was circulated around the Web, generating more buzz about the show than anything it has shown on TV all season.
But there are challenges to translating Internet entertainment to TV. For example, on TV, a Web clip of a narcoleptic dachshund collapsing in sleep mid-scamper looks and sounds muddy. But creators of "Web Junk 20" knew that when they came up with the title. "We're trying to do a show that doesn't aspire to do anything more than show what's working on the Web," says Mr. Graden.

映画産業の今年の展望は、いまのところこれといった好材料も悪材料もない。しかし若い世代の観客達の更なる興味をひくような、たとえば "Monday Night Football," "Halo," iTunes, Comcast On Demand, "EverQuest," Gizmodo, ESPN, AOL, HBO, Yahoo, Bravo, HDNet, CinemaNow, PokerRoom and MySpace" などとの競争に勝って、観客を家から出て映画館に向かわせるための具体的有効な戦略は示されていない。映画館経営チェーンの協力も現状では期待薄である。

Ask any Hollywood studio executive whether 2005 was a good year and you'll get an emphatic no. That's because the major studios are under severe duress and they know it.
MGM and DreamWorks, the last two studios that were not part of larger corporations, were sold to a consortium led by Sony Pictures Entertainment and to Paramount Pictures, respectively. And well paid studio execs are scrambling to preserve the status quo even as box office and DVD profits are on the wane and new digital distribution paradigms challenge current ways of doing business.
As ever, just when Hollywood thinks it has figured out the winning formula -- build costly tentpoles and cram them down the throats of the masses with millions of ad dollars -- it's way past time to come up with a new approach. The studios don't have a simple solution for what's happening. The summer slump was supposed to be counteracted by the year-end studio juggernauts "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and Peter Jackson's "King Kong." But 2005 box office still declined from that of 2004 by more than 5%.
The pictures this year weren't any worse than usual. They met the studio standard -- such as it is. But they weren't good enough to fight the competition, especially for the attention of young men, from the likes of "Monday Night Football," "Halo," iTunes, Comcast On Demand, "EverQuest," Gizmodo, ESPN, AOL, HBO, Yahoo, Bravo, HDNet, CinemaNow, PokerRoom and MySpace. And greedy theater chains didn't help their efforts to lure filmgoers out of the house by adding assaultive ads to their movie preshows.
