今年のハロウイーンには、良質のホラーＤＶＤが発売される。そのうちの最上品のひとつ、ヴァル・リュートンのホラー・コレクションを紹介しよう。

リュートンが1940年代にＲＫＯで製作した低予算映画9作品が収められている。
スタイリッシュでセクシーな "Cat People"、心理ホラーのジャンルを確立した作品である、ブードゥー呪術を耽美的に描いた"I Walked With a Zombie"など。
両方とも、リュートンの手がけた作品を、洗練されたノワールな味わいに仕立てあげた、ジャック・ターナー監督作品である。2人は『レノンとマッカートニーのような』関係だったとギレルモ・デル・トロは言う。

この中の7作品には、リュートンの熱狂的ファンによる解説が付いているが、どれもたいへん質が高い。ドキュメンタリー『Shadows in the Dark 』には、ウクライナでの幼少期から、セルズニックと共にＲＫＯでの成功を収めるまでのリュートンの軌跡が描かれている。ホラーの巨匠の中からは、デル・トロやジョージ・ロメロ、二―ル・ガイマン監督が賛辞を述べている。

"Death is good," producer Val Lewton said when asked what he was trying to say with one of his classy but creepy B-movies. Like a busted clock, he's right once in a while -- notably on that darkest of nights, October 31.

The Val Lewton Horror Collection: Nine B-movie wonders Lewton produced for RKO in the 1940s. Lewton's best-known works -- the stylish and sexy "Cat People" and the voodoo excursion "I Walked With a Zombie" -- staked out the psychological horror genre. Both were done with director Jacques Tourneur, who gave Lewton's works a sophisticated noirish look. The men "were like Lennon and McCartney," horror director Guillermo del Toro says.

All but two of the films have commentaries by Lewton enthusiasts, which are uniformly good. The documentary "Shadows in the Dark" tracks the producer from his youth in Russia to his stint with David O. Selznick to his successful run at RKO. Del Toro, George A. Romero and Neil Gaiman are among the horror elite who pay tribute to Lewton.

Ｆilm historian Steve Haberman says, Lewton "was thinking about what in reality frightens people: the dark, the unknown, madness, death."

マイクロソフト社のＸボックスの中で最も人気の高い『Halo』は、近未来のスーパーソルジャー「Master Chief」が地球外生物の襲来と戦うアドベンチャー・ゲームである。映画『Halo』はジャクソン監督のプロダクションによりニュージーランド・ウエリントンで撮影が行われる予定だ。

「ジャクソン監督は、ゲームの一部熱狂的ファンが好むであろうようなシニシズム（皮肉・冷笑）を排除して、多くの一般映画ファンが期待するような作品に仕上げるつもりだ」とラングレー。ちなみにジャクソン監督自身『Halo』のファンでビデオゲーム愛好家である。
シナリオライターで小説家のアレックス・ガーランドがオリジナルシナリオ執筆を担当、監督名は来週発表予定で、出演者名は未発表である。

The Oscar-winning creative team behind the "The Lord of the Rings" films, including director Peter Jackson, has been named to run the production of the upcoming film based on Microsoft Corp.'s blockbuster "Halo" video game, the company said on Tuesday.

Jackson and his wife, Fran Walsh, will serve as the executive producers for "Halo," which is targeted for worldwide release in mid-2007 by Universal Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox film studios.

Universal will oversee the film's production and domestic distribution. Fox will handle international distribution.

Donna Langley, Universal's production president, told Reuters it is impossible at this early stage to give specific details about the film.

"The game is a good template," hinted Langley, who added that "Halo" will have a bigger budget than "Doom," the video game-inspired Universal film due in theaters later this month.

Langley described "Doom" as a monster chase movie that moves from Point A to Point B. The "Halo" games have a more complex mythology, characters, environments and worlds, Langley said.

"Halo," the best-selling franchise for Microsoft's Xbox game console, follows the adventures of the futuristic super-soldier "Master Chief" as he battles an alien onslaught.

ERADICATING CYNICISM

The "Halo" movie will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand, and will use Jackson's production and post-production facilities there.

"He eradicates any cynicism that might exist with core fans (of the game). At the same time, he makes a movie like this appealing to a mainstream audience," Langley said of the director, who is an avid video game player and fan of "Halo."

The executive producers will collaborate with Universal, Fox and Microsoft's Bungie Studios, which created the game.

Screenwriter and novelist Alex Garland wrote the original feature film adaptation of Halo. A director will be named in coming weeks, and the cast has yet to be announced.

Jackson and Walsh are currently in post-production on Universal's "King Kong," slated for release in December. "Halo" marks the first time that the duo are acting as executive producers on a major film that Jackson is not directing.

The video game industry -- whose sales rival those of U.S. box offices -- is gaining status, taming its maverick image and moving closer to Hollywood. By the time of its release, "Halo" will join such other video game-inspired films as "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," "Resident Evil," and "Doom." But the industry's Hollywood inroads have not been without bumps.

Hollywood's major film studios gave Microsoft a cool reception last spring when the company came to them with an initially high asking price for "Halo." The script was delivered by costumed, laser gun-toting messengers.

As part of their deal with the global software giant and No. 2 video game console maker, Universal and Fox will pay Microsoft $5 million plus a percentage of movie ticket sales. The price is capped at 10 percent of domestic box office receipts.

Universal Pictures is operated by the NBC Universal media division of General Electric Co., and is co-owned by Vivendi Universal. Fox is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp Ltd.

Eight Californians were charged Tuesday with involvement in the illegal release of "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith" before the movie appeared in theaters.
Court documents allege the piracy began with a "screener" copy of the film at a post-production facility where one of the defendants worked and ended with the movie being released online the day before its worldwide release. "Screeners" are copies of films made available for such purposes as reviewing or for use by voters in industry awards programs.
All are accused of misdemeanor copyright infringement charges that carry up to one year in prison. One of the defendants also faces a felony count of uploading the movie onto the Internet, which carries a sentence as long as three years in prison if convicted.
All eight defendants are scheduled to appear in federal court next month.

Actors Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher were married on Saturday, capping their celebrated two-year-long older woman, younger man relationship, two celebrity magazines reported on Sunday.

Representatives for Kutcher, 27, and Moore, 42, could not be immediately reached for comment, but both Us Weekly and People magazine reported on their Web sites that the couple were married in Los Angeles area on Saturday.
Us Weekly reported that the wedding was attended by about 100 of the couple's friends, including Moore's second husband Bruce Willis. Also at the wedding were actress Lucy Liu and Moore's three daughters from her marriage to Willis.

Moore, who starred in "Ghost," "G.I. Jane" and "Striptease," first began dating the younger Kutcher in 2003, just as she was making a highly publicized return to the screen as a high-kicking villain in "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle."
Kutcher, whose break came as a star in television's "That '70s Show," is co-creator of the MTV reality show "Punk'd." His films include "Guess Who" in 2005 and "Dude, Where's My Car?" in 2000.

It was the first marriage for Kutcher and third for Moore. She was married from 1980 to 1984 to rock musician Freddie Moore and from 1987 to 2000 to Willis.

People Magazine said Kutcher and Moore met at a dinner in New York City in 2003. After Kutcher began dating Moore, the magazine said "he quickly carved out a place in the lives of her three daughters by Willis -- Rumer, 17; Scout, 14; and Tallulah, 11 --who came to embrace Kutcher as a third parent, affectionately calling him MOD, short for 'My Other Dad."'

The relationship between Moore and Kutcher has been seen by some in Hollywood as evidence of a liberating new trend in which older American women are dating younger men, challenging the traditional convention of May-December romances.

It's not often that a Nobel laureate, Pulitzer Prize winners, Grammy winners, Academy Award winners and just about every other kind of winner share a single stage. But a benefit for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, sponsored by The New Yorker as part of its annual New Yorker Festival, brought an eclectic and star-studded cast of performers to Manhattan on Saturday night. The lineup included Toni Morrison, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Kevin Kline, Richard Ford, Willem Dafoe and lots of zydeco music.
Most of the evening's entertainment celebrated New Orleans culture.
Actress Patricia Clarkson read Tennessee Williams' letters from the French Quarter, New Yorker writer Calvin Trillin read an essay about the city's anything-goes attitude, and actor Terrence Howard read a Mark Twain essay about New Orleans architecture.
Woody Allen played the clarinet with Eddy Davis and his New Orleans Jazz Band, and Kevin Kline played Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927," a song from the mid-1970's that sounds as if it could have been written about Hurricane Katrina.
Tickets for the event ranged from $50 to $250, with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross. Conde Nast Publications, publisher of The New Yorker, will match the donation.
Allen Touissant, a legendary New Orleans pianist, summed up the night: "If you'd like to know how to get from the Big Apple to the Big Easy, take Highway Love, and you'll get there."

The superhero movie "Fantastic Four" overcame some of the worst reviews of the year to top the North American box office with better-than-expected weekend ticket sales of $56 million, its distributor 20th Century Fox said on Sunday.
The News Corp. -owned studio had hoped for an opening in the mid- to high-$30 million range. The film, which cost a little over $100 million to make, is based on characters in the comic book stable of Marvel Enterprises Inc., and had been in the works for 11 years.
Last weekend's champion, "War of the Worlds," slipped to No. 2 with $31.3 million for the three days beginning on Friday, followed by "Batman Begins" with $10.2 million.

"Fantastic Four," which revolves around a quartet imbued with special powers such as invisibility and elasticity after a space mission gone wrong, appeared to fill moviegoers' desire for something "light and frothy," said Fox distribution president Bruce Snyder.
But critics were unimpressed. The New York Times said the film was "fantastic only its commitment to mediocrity," while USA Today was marginally kinder, calling it a "ho-hum futuristic foray."
The film's less-than-stellar cast includes Jessica Alba and Michael Chiklis. It was directed by Tim Story, best known for the urban comedy "Barbershop."
