A noted scholar is ready to unleash hell on the new 20th Century Fox epic Kingdom of Heaven. James Reston Jr., a noted author and expert on the Crusades, is accusing the filmmakers of stealing parts of his 2001 tome, Warriors of God: Richard the Lionheart and Saladin in the Third Crusade, for the big-budget would-be blockbuster due out next week. "The essence of it is that this is a film that is derived from the first 100 pages of my book," Reston tells the Associated Press.

Reston says the valiant story wasn't dreamed up by Hollywood hacks, but instead was lifted from his years of painstaking research--and he claims to have proof.
Reston tells AP that veteran producer and former Tri-Star Pictures chairman Mike Medavoy optioned Warriors of God in November 2001 shortly after it's publication and sent a letter to the Oscar-nominated Scott about adapting the story to the big screen, describing it as cross between Lawrence of Arabia and A Man for All Seasons.
The director, who had commissioned development on another historical epic at the time as a companion to the Best Picture-winning Gladiator, nixed the idea. But, Reston claimes, within a few months a script for Kingdom appeared with striking parallels to the beginning chapters of Warriors, which deals with a "noble's quest" to redeem the Holy Land from the Infidel that resulted in a battlefield encounter between Muslim hero Saladin and English King Richard the Lionheart during the Third Crusade.

Reston believes Scott & Co. ditched their previous historical script and swiped elements from Warriors.
"Miraculously, the screenwriter came up with this concept based on Warriors of God in a two-week timeframe," Reston tells AP. "They claim they never read the book and that's laughable."
Kingdom is credited to William Monahan. It is his first produced screenplay, although he has three other projects projects in various stages of development: Jurassic Park IV, the Martin Scorsese-Leonardo DiCaprio-Matt Damon crime flick The Departed and the historical war epic Tripoli, which will star Keanu Reeves and Ben Kingsley. Scott has been mentioned as a possible director for the latter. Medavoy, who no longer has an option on Reston's book, did not comment, saying he has not read Monahan's script.

In the opinion of New York-based entertainment attorney Howard Leib, Reston's case is a matter of interpretation. "It comes down to whether or not the similar issues are similar because of historical fact or because of style and expression," Leib explained to E! Online. "If the similarities are all people from history and real dates and real locations, then there's no case there. But if the similarities have to do with interpretation, then in any novelization of history you're going to see a fair amount of creative expression. That's the question. If [Scott and his writers] used his book as a jumping off point・hen what they wrote is a derivative work."

Of course, Reston might have a reason other than potential litigation to go public with his beef--that is, to sell more books. Variety reports that the author sent out a press release offering to lend his expertise on the Crusades to media outlets. The statement also hypes Kingdom of Heaven as "sure to be one of the summer's first major blockbusters!"
But Reston took umbrage at the notion of trying to capitalize on the movie's release.
"I think you've got it upside down. It was the movie that latched onto the book. It's my view that the whole movie is based on my book," he tells Variety.
Let the battle begin. Kingdom of Heaven invades theaters May 6.

People who secretly videotape movies when they are shown in theaters could go to prison for up to three years under a measure signed into law by President Bush on Wednesday. The law also toughens penalties for hackers and industry insiders who distribute music, movies or other copyrighted works before their official release dates.
Bush signed the bill in a closed-door ceremony and released no public statement. Copies of hit movies frequently show up on the Internet while they're still in theaters, allowing skinflint fans to see new releases without buying a ticket. Pirates sneak camcorders into movie theaters to tape films directly off the screen, while some industry insiders leak copies to tech-savvy hackers before they're officially released. The U.S. Customs Department has estimated that these distribution sources are responsible for 95 percent of all pirated movies available online.
Those found guilty could face up to three years in prison, as well as lawsuits from copyright holders.
The law also shields "family-friendly" services like ClearPlay that strip violent or sexually explicit scenes from movies. That provision is less popular with Hollywood, which says such services violate their copyrighted works by altering them without permission. Nevertheless, a trade group representing major movie studios hailed the bill's passage. "Video piracy is not a victimless crime," said Dan Glickman, president of the Motion Picture Association of America. The two houses of Congress approved slightly different versions of the measure last year and could not reconcile their differences before the session ended. Reuters/VNU

Arabs starring in a new Hollywood blockbuster set during the Crusades say it will enhance Western understanding of the Muslim world rather than reinforce old stereotypes, as some had feared. Syria's Ghassan Massoud, who plays the Muslim leader Saladin in "Kingdom of Heaven," says it will also show Washington the benefits of diplomacy over war in resolving Middle East crises. The film, by "Gladiator" director Ridley Scott, depicts a 12th century Muslim-Christian battle for Jerusalem during the Third Crusade"Saladin fights battles, but he also enters into dialogue. We want to show that dialogue can be much better than war," Massoud told Reuters. "Today, America has overwhelming force but it is as if they don't want to build a dialogue," he said by phone from Syria.

Some religious figures and academics are concerned that a film about the Crusades, a term once used by President Bush to describe the war on terror, will fuel the idea of an intractable clash of civilisations between East and West. They say it could fuel animosity toward Islam in the West and heighten suspicions of the West in the Muslim world, where the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan have been portrayed by some as part of a war on Islam.　But Massoud and Egyptian actor Khaled el-Nabawy, who plays the part of a Muslim religious leader, said the film would improve Western understanding of the Arab and Islamic world. "We have Christians who think this movie is pro-Muslim and Muslims who think that this movie is pro-Christian. It will make both go and see the movie, which is positive for improving understanding," Nabawy said. "It's time for the West to know more about us," he told Reuters in Cairo. "When you don't know me, you're going to judge me in a bad way, which is risky," he said. "We are not terrorists. We are very civilised and our history is a witness to this." Massoud said Saladin, a Kurd who recaptured Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187, would be presented as a warrior, but also a proponent of peace and dialogue. "Ridley Scott respects the character of Saladin very much. He wants to portray him as a noble and respectable person," he said. Massoud hoped the film would help repair some of the damage done to the image of Arabs and Muslims by what he sees as unfair Western media coverage of the Islamic world after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on U.S. cities, blamed on Islamic militants. "One film isn't enough. But it might affect some sections of opinion," he said. The movie, filmed in Morocco and Spain, is due out in May. Nabawy said some Arabs were concerned it would be biased against Muslims because it was produced by a U.S. firm, Twentieth Century Fox. But those worries were misplaced. "Ridley and screenwriter William Monahan made great efforts to have an objective and balanced script. They were discussing everything together until the last day of shooting."

Born Alexandra Zuck on April 23, 1941, in Bayonne, N.J., Dee became a model while in grade school.

Dee credited her son with helping her turn her life around. She began seeing a therapist regularly and hoped to land a job on a TV series. Kate Bosworth portrayed Dee in last year's movie "Beyond the Sea," a biography of Darin. Actor Kevin Spacey, who played Darin the film, has said Dee approved of the movie. "She called me...and said she loved it," he said last year.

The Sundance Film Festival moved into its debut weekend on Saturday with long lines for movies like "The Matador," starring Pierce Brosnan , as well as for films that lacked big-name stars, such as "Brick" or "Lila Says." Sundance, the top U.S. event for independent films made outside Hollywood's studios, is often criticized for offering too much of a mix of art films and commercial movies. But more than ever this year, audiences are being led to consider that Hollywood and indies need one another to thrive.

Movies like "The Matador," in which James Bond actor Brosnan plays a whoremonger and hit man, draws the media and audiences who, in turn, are exposed to "Brick," from director Rian Johnson about a high school loner, or "Lila Says," a sexually charged film from Lebanese-born Ziad Doueiri. "(Sundance) gives my film exposure, and that allows the movie to break a few of the stereotypes of Arabs," he said.

Friday's premiere of documentary "Inside Deep Throat," about the 1972 pornographic film and its impact on America, offered a good example. It will be released by Hollywood's Universal Pictures in a wide number of theaters when, until recently, documentaries were screened in very few theaters. But ticket sales for 2004's "Fahrenheit 9/11" ($220 million global) and "Super Size Me" ($28 million), have shown the studios that documentaries can hit big at box offices. Produced by Oscar winner Brian Grazer but made by indie veterans Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, "Inside Deep Throat" is overtly political and filled with frontal nudity -- two characteristics Hollywood normally shies from. "We're sort of downtown (art) and Brian's sort of uptown (commerce)," Barbato said in front of a packed theater.
