Mystic Riverは、Dennis Lehaneによる同名の小説を、アカデミー受賞ライターBrian Helgelandが脚色したものである。この映画には、過去のイーストウッド作品、例えば「許されざる者」などとの間に共通項を見出すことができる。監督自身は、この作品が、人間が独自の正義を見出すということに対して、ひとつのメッセージを送るものであるとしている。「これは『法』に関する物語です。法の裁きを自らの手中にすることは、必ずしも絶対的な正義ではない、ということを提示しているのです。殆どの場合、そういうことが言えるのではないでしょうか。」Mystic River was written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland and is adapted from Dennis Lehane's novel of the same name. It is easy to draw a parallel between Mystic River and some of Eastwood's earlier films, such as Unforgiven. The director feels, however, that his film sends a message about seeking one's own kind of justice. "This is a story about the law. It shows that taking the law into your own hands is not necessarily the right thing. In most cases it's not."
イーストウッドが初めてDennis Lehaneによる「Mystic River」の原作小説 を知ったのは、新聞の中の要約記事によってである。彼はそのとき既にこの物語を映画化することの難かしさを直感したが、しかしそういう困難さが、かえって優れた映画を創り上げてくれるということをイーストウッドはいつも確信してきたのだ。この「Mystic River」によって、ｲｰストウッドは「ほんの些細な出来事が何かを生み出し、人々の人生を変えていく」ということを提示するのに成功した。
Eastwood first came across Lehane's book in the form of a summary on the back page of a newspaper. He immediately saw the story's inherent obstacles but has always believed that such difficult hurdles only make for more interesting dramas. With Mystic River, Eastwood succeeds in showing "what one little incident can do and how it affects so many people."

メラニ―・グリフィスが夫アントニオ・バンデラスに続いてブロードウエイに出演する。バンデラスは現在ブロードウエイで上演中の「Nine」で”女たらし”の映画監督役を演じているが、一方、「Working Girl」や「Crazy in Alabama」といった映画で知られる女優グリフィスは「Ambassador Theatre 」で上演7年めに入った｢シカゴ」にRoxie Hart役で７月１１日から参加し、9月28日まで出演する予定である。バンデラスは「Eugene O'Neill Theatre」で上演中の｢Nine」に8月28日まで出演予定だが、上演延長も有り得るということだ。
Melanie Griffith is joining her husband, Antonio Banderas, on Broadway. While Banderas plays a women-obsessed film director in "Nine," Griffith will be portraying show-biz floozy Roxie Hart in the long-running revival of "Chicago."Griffith, star of movies such as "Working Girl" and "Crazy in Alabama," will join the cast of "Chicago," now in its seventh year on Broadway, on July 11.
